Stephen McQuillan features on Sunny Side Funding Panel
Our Creative Director, Stephen McQuillan, spoke on a panel at Sunny Side of the Doc Festival. The panel discussed the future of documentary and factual programming funding, highlighting the atypical strategies companies are taking to make sure projects secure funding.
McQuillan, said he has taken inspiration from the digital market to understand what audiences are currently engaged in and this helped influence the development of his Nat Geo series Defending Europe.
“From a creative POV, within the history genre there’s been an explosion of history podcasts in the UK. The Rest is History has something like 5m streams. For Defending Europe with Nat Geo, we deliberately did a thousand-year span of history because people are looking for a full working knowledge [so] they can go down to the pub to impress their mates with what they’ve heard in the last hour. It’s creatively changing the way we create content.”
